Backcare - an introduction
Good posture & comfort will require seating that will suit the user, the workstation and the task.

The User
Look for these posture reference points, but ensure optimum comfort is achieved dynamic sitting and movement.
Line of sight horizontal to 60 degrees below
Erect spine
Avoid twisting of the upper torso
Aim for approximately horizontal thighs and 90 degree bend at the knee
Adjust seat height
Feet on the floor or footrest to give ankle to lower leg angle of about 90 degrees


The Workstation
Look for these workstation reference points
Upper arms hang vertically and forearm horizontally
VDU centre should be at approximately 35 degrees below the horizontal from the eyes.
Feet should be on the floor or footrest with freedom to move lower leg


The Workchair
The key element in the complexity of the total IT workstation can often be the Workchair which needs to suit the user, the workstation and the task.
An appropriate Workchair must offer good stable body support and enable the user to achieve a dynamic posture through movement of the chair (not twisting the body) during IT and office tasks or activity.

Workchairs for Individuals
An individual user should select a workchair to suit their personal physiology
An individual user can often easily operate more controls to select optimum comfort and posture
Workchairs for Multi-Users
Multi user workchairs should suit the majority of users but where good comfort and posture cannot be achieved alternative or individual chairs must be available
Ease of use is essential for multi-use. Single lever synchronized control mechanisms for seat back/seat tilt is preferable.
Easy to adjust air inflatable lumber support can often ensure that high levels of comfort can be achieved for the majority of users.
Generally
Ensure blood circulation in thighs and lower leg is not restricted
Ensure good posture can be achieved, maintained comfortably and easily changed
Ensure good spine support is attained
Ensure that the seat height range suits the user and the workstation worksurface height.
Appropriate fabric texture that will breathe and offer comfort as well as frictional support to prevent sliding off the seat
Encourage frequent posture adjustment by the user
